The denim aesthetic is one of the most durable looks in fashion. And for those of us with limited closet space and budget, that is the whole appeal. Look at photos for the past hundred and fifty years, and you’ll find people wearing this durable, comfortable fabric. It suits everyone and goes with everything. Denim reads casual, but the right piece can look polished, western, or even a little dressy.
We’re talking about so much more than just a pair of jeans. Denim shows up as dresses, skirts, jackets, shirts, and jumpsuits. This guide covers how to wear it well. It also links down to our full edit, sorted by the pieces you actually want to wear.

The difference between denim and jeans
People use the two words interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. If you aren’t sure about the difference between denim and jeans, just remember that denim is the fabric. Jeans are one garment made from it.
Denim is a sturdy cotton twill. Traditionally woven with an indigo thread one way and a white thread the other. That weave gives traditional denim its signature, diagonal texture and faded blue face. Jeans are just trousers cut from that fabric, in a number of styles based on the classic five-pocket shape.
So every pair of jeans is denim, but not all denim is jeans. When you shop the denim aesthetic, remember that this is a fabric that shows up in a number of weights and colors, not just a single style.
Washes and how to mix them
Wash sets the whole mood. A light, faded wash reads relaxed and summery. A dark indigo reads sharp and almost dressy. Black denim is the most polished of the lot.
And forget what you may have heard. Double denim still works. The trick is contrast. Pair a light top with darker bottoms, or flip it, so the two pieces read as a deliberate choice. If you’re going to match the exact same wash, then you’ll need to add that contrast with accessories.

How to wear denim, day to night
By day, keep it easy. A chambray shirt over a tee, a light-wash skirt, or a relaxed pair of jeans all read fresh. Lighter washes and softer shapes do the work here.
By night, lean darker and sharper. A black denim dress, a dark indigo blazer, or a fitted skirt all dress right up with a good pair of heels. The same fabric that looks off-duty at noon looks deliberate after dark. The wash and cut set the tone.
What to avoid
A few things tip denim from intentional to sloppy. Head-to-toe matching washes is the big one, so break up the blue. Watch the fit too, because denim that bags everywhere reads tired instead of relaxed. And check the fabric content. A stiff polyester blend never wears in the way real cotton denim does, and you will feel the difference by hour two.
When in doubt, let one denim piece lead and keep the rest simple.
