The fantasy is a slow morning on the Amalfi Coast. Espresso on a terrace, a boat at noon, dinner somewhere with a view you did not book in advance. The clothes in that fantasy are always the same: breezy, pale, a little nautical, nothing that looks like it tried.
The good news is that the Riviera look is basically a formula. A tight palette of white, cream, and tan, one navy stripe to make it read coastal, and a couple of woven accessories doing the heavy lifting. The wide-leg linen trousers
Start at the bottom with a pair of wide-leg linen trousers in white. The long, loose leg is the whole silhouette of this look: it moves in a breeze, it reads elegant without effort, and white keeps everything bright and summer-bound. High waist, pull-on, the kind of trouser you can sit on a boat in.
These are a rayon-linen blend rather than pure linen, which is a fair trade most days. You get the drape and the breeze with fewer of the deep linen creases, though white this loose can go a little sheer in strong sun, so check the lining and keep a nude seamless underneath.

The striped top
The one non-neutral in the whole outfit is a navy-and-white Breton top, and it is what turns a pale outfit into a coastal one. The boat neck and the horizontal stripe are pure French-Riviera shorthand. Tuck it into the trousers, push the sleeves up, done.
A Breton is close to a forever piece, but the fit is where the cheap ones give themselves away. A loose, relaxed knit reads more authentically off-duty than a thin clingy one, so size for an easy drape rather than a tight hug. The navy can bleed a little on the first wash, so do it cold and on its own.
The flat sandals
On the feet, a strappy flat sandal in a soft neutral. The Riviera runs on flat leather and thin straps, never a chunky sole, and a delicate strap across the foot keeps the line long and the look dressy enough for dinner. This one sits on a memory-foam footbed, which is the difference between strolling a hill town and limping down it.
It is a vegan leather rather than the real thing, so it will not soften and patina the way calfskin does, and a glossy finish can read a touch flat up close. For a sandal you walk miles in and rinse off at the beach, that is the right compromise to make.
The straw tote
The bag is a woven straw tote, because nothing says coast like raffia. Big enough for a towel, a book, and a bottle of water, and put-together enough to carry into a cafe afterward without looking like you raided the beach. The natural straw goes with the entire palette by default.
Handwoven straw is charming and a little wild, so expect small irregularities and the occasional stray fiber, which is the texture and not a flaw. It is an open-top design, so tuck a zip pouch inside for your phone and cards if you are in a crowd.
The oversized sunglasses
For the face, an oversized square sunglass in a pale frame. Big lenses are the Riviera default because they do half the styling for you, and a soft off-white or cream frame stays in the palette where a stark black pair would punch a hole in it. Pushed up into your hair when you head inside, they double as a headband.
These are an acrylic frame with UV400 lenses, so they look far above their price but feel light rather than substantial in the hand. Check the exact frame color on the listing before you buy, since the pale and the tortoise versions read very differently against this outfit.
The silk scarf
The finishing move is a small silk scarf. This is the most Riviera thing on the list and the easiest way to look intentional: knotted at the neck, tied to the tote handle, or folded into a headscarf with the sunglasses over the top for the full off-a-vintage-postcard effect.
This one is real mulberry silk, which drapes and knots beautifully but will snag on a rough nail or a bag zip, so handle it gently and hand-wash it. A single small scarf in a warm print does more for the look than almost anything else you can add.
How to wear it
Put it together and the formula does the talking: white trousers, the stripe tucked in, flat sandals, the straw tote on your shoulder, sunglasses up, scarf at the neck. It is five neutrals and one navy stripe, which is exactly why every piece works with every other piece, and why the whole thing repacks into a carry-on without a second thought.
